State launches programme to make armyworm fall

The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has confirmed that the fall armyworm is indeed in SA. But experts say the pest, which has already devastated crops in several neighbouring countries, is unlikely to wreak as much havoc locally as it has elsewhere.

Recent Consumer Price Index data shows that food and non-alcoholic beverages inflation accelerated to 11.7% year-on-year (y/y) in December 2016 from 11.6% in November 20161 (with non-alcoholic beverages aside, food inflation increased to 12% y/y in December 2016 from 11.8% y/y in November 2016).

SA’s agricultural machinery sales paint a mixed picture

Recent agricultural machinery sales data indicates that in December 2016, tractor sales were up by 28% when compared to December 2015 — with 349 units sold. However, this was 23% lower than the previous month’s sales. Meanwhile, combine harvester sales were at the same level as for December 2015 – with only 7 units sold.
