Policy confusion threatens food security

Johannesburg — PICK n Pay chairman Gareth Ackerman warned yesterday that a lack of clear government policy on land ownership was a threat to global food security, just weeks before the expected release in SA of a government policy document on land reform.

Johannesburg — PICK n Pay chairman Gareth Ackerman warned yesterday that a lack of clear government policy on land ownership was a threat to global food security, just weeks before the expected release in SA of a government policy document on land reform.

Debate in SA about the possible nationalisation of land - a feared outcome of the government's planned green paper on land reform - was an example of growing uncertainty over land tenure in developing countries, which would harm farmers' ability to expand and raise capital, Mr Ackerman said at the opening of the Global Consumer Goods Forum's summit in London.
