Commercial farmers struggling to stay afloat in the face of a devastating drought are now auctioning off their livestock. Agricultural unions said the farmers in the Western Cape, North West and Free State were among the worst affected.
Agricultural Business Chamber head of economic research Wandile Sihlobo said the drought had led to lower supplies in the country’s crop production of maize and beans, among other foodstuffs.
“Food inflation has reached a high of 11.6 percent, and we think that by the end of next month we could see it reaching 12 percent.
