Industry leaders agree that the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Senzeni Zokwana, demonstrates a healthy interest in agricultural matters, but is not particularly proficient in implementing policies for the sector.

Wandile Sihlobo, agricultural economist at the Agricultural Business Chamber (Agbiz), said Zokwana’s willingness to engage makes him a good leader.
“By appointing Mike Mlengana, who has a track record of good leadership within the farming sector, Zokwana was able to improve communication and bridge the gap between farmers and the ministry,” he said.
“What I would like to see in the sector is improved communication between the private and public sectors, and farmers,’’ he said.
