Introduction: Fromഀ January till December 2017 18,6 million 10kg bags more (19%) were sold onഀ the national fresh produce markets than the corresponding period in 2016.ഀ Market prices were 26% lower during the same period. For the 2017 harvestഀ year, about 1 000 hectares were planted less than 2016's more than 52 000ഀ hectares. To compare: From January till December 2017 about 1,3 millionഀ 10kg bags more (1,1%) were sold on the national fresh produce marketsഀ than the corresponding period in 2015, the largest harvest so far. Marketഀ prices, however, were 21% higher than the corresponding period in 2015.ഀ January to end July this year 1% more sales on markets than the same timeഀ last year, but at 12% higher prices.

Markpryseഀ was egter 21% hoër as die ooreenstemmende tydperk in 2015. Januarie totഀ einde Julie vanjaar is 1% meer verkoop op markte as dieselfde tyd verledeഀ jaar, maar teen 12% hoër pryse.

New report supports expanding VAT zero-rating

Aഀ new report by the Institute for Economic Justice (IEJ), entitledഀ Mitigating the impact of the VAT increase: can zero-rating help? showsഀ that exempting a limited number of carefully chosen additional goods andഀ services from VAT (zero-rating) is one viable route. This is an importantഀ finding as the VAT increase reduces the disposable incomes of all Southഀ Africans, including those of poor and low-income households.

Size distribution of potatoes sold on markets

Potatoesഀ size distribution on all markets: Class1, 10 kg bags (July of each yearഀ 2016 to 2018). Large potatoes for 2016 was at 25% and increased to 28%ഀ for 2017 and increased even further to 31% for 2018. Medium size potatoesഀ for 2016 was at 63% but dropped to 60% in 2017 and dropped even furtherഀ to 58% for 2018. Small and baby potatoes represented a total of 12% inഀ 2016 but dropped to 11% in both 2017 and 2018.
