Introduction: Record harvests were realised in 2015, 2017ഀ & 2018, compared to others years. 2015 had the lowest real price inഀ recent times, but that of 2017 was higher and 2018 even higher.

Researchersഀ have warned that crops such as maize, rice, sugar cane, sorghum, beet,ഀ tomato, potato, cotton and pasture grasses worldwide are at serious riskഀ from fall armyworm (FAW) infestation if efficient measures are not taken.

How does the consumer price of potatoes compare with otherഀ products?

Itഀ is clear that the price of bread (white and brown) on a per kilogramഀ basis is relatively the most expensive starch group. Mealie meal’s pricesഀ increased sharply during the first few months of 2016 because of theഀ drought experienced. The average price of loose potatoes (1 kilogram)ഀ also increased during this period after it moved sideways for long aroundഀ R10 per kilogram.

Pack store and marketing effectivity project: Limpopoഀ results

Theഀ pack store and marketing effectivity project focusses on the relevantഀ processes involved in getting potatoes market ready. It comprises theഀ lifting process, transport to pack stores, as well as the washing andഀ packing processes. The focus is on quality aspects, weight loss, tuberഀ damage, labour effectivity, market prices realised, and the costsഀ associated with the lifting and packing processes. Fifteen pack storesഀ were visited during September 2018.

Size distribution of potatoes sold on markets

Potatoesഀ size distribution on all markets: Class1, 10 kg bags (January of eachഀ year 2017 to 2019). Large potatoes for 2017 was at 25% and increased toഀ 30% for 2018 and dropped to 29% for 2019. Medium size potatoes for 2017ഀ was at 62% but dropped to 59% for both 2018 and 2019. Small and babyഀ potatoes represented a total of 13% in 2017 but dropped to 11% for 2018ഀ and 2019.
