Introduction: Record harvests were realised in 2015, 2017ഀ & 2018, compared to others years. 2015 had the lowest real price inഀ recent times, but that of 2017 was higher and 2018 even higher.

The Potatoes SA Congress and Seed Potato Growers' Forumഀ will be held on 17 and 18 September 2019. Bill on Plant Breeders’ Rights 2018 published

Summary:ഀ Revision of the Plant Breeders’ Rights Act, 1976. Already started inഀ October 2009. Regulations relating to maximum levels of metals inഀ foodstuffs

Generalഀ Provisions: For the purpose of section 2(1)(b)(i) of the Foodstuffs,ഀ Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act, 1972 (Act No 54 of 1972), foodstuffഀ listed in column II of Annexure A is deemed to be contaminated, impure,ഀ or is deemed to be harmful or injurious to human health, if it containsഀ the metal in column I in amounts exceeding the corresponding level inഀ column II when measured using accredited analytical methods.

Erence Phooko

Erenceഀ Phooko is on his second year on the Enterprise Development Program, butഀ also receives assistance from NTK as a Jobs Fund beneficiary as well asഀ from the Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. Theഀ latter is currently busy installing a centre pivot and a reservoir forഀ him. Potatoes South Africa is supporting him with seed for the plantingഀ of ten hectares of potatoes whilst the rest comes from NTK.
ഀ During the previous season Enos attained an average yield of 41 tons perഀ hectare. He supplies his product to McCain Foods and the Mozambicanഀ market.

Oos-Vrystaat boere skenk aartappels aan veeboere

‘nഀ Handjie vol Oos-Vrystaat boere het besluit om eerder hulleഀ "baby" en "small" grootte aartappels te skenk asഀ om weg te gooi. Die aartappels word in ton sakke gegooi en word dan deurഀ Shoprite na Sutherland vervoer. Veeboere in Sutherland wat droogte ervaarഀ kan dan die aartappels kom oplaai en gebruik as veevoer.

Western Cape Agriculture commits to developing blackഀ smallholder farmers

Commodityഀ groups commit to another five years of farmer development.  Theഀ private sector has shown its commitment to developing black smallholderഀ farmers in the province, with all eleven of the agricultural commodityഀ groups who have been part of the Western Cape Department of Agriculture’sഀ commodity approach to land reform, signing new MOUs last week. Under theഀ commodity approach, the commodity groups have committed to helping blackഀ smallholder farmers and land reform beneficiaries become more successfulഀ through access to markets for their goods, mentorship and training. Theഀ commodity groups have also contributed funding and in-kind support towardsഀ the implementation of successful land reform projects in the province.

The impact of the increasing electricity, labour andഀ chemical prices on the sustainability of potato production

Recentഀ months have seen significant upward pressure on inputs costs in theഀ potato industry. Some of these costs are considered as being administeredഀ costs, e.g. fuel, electricity and labour. The annual increase in inputഀ costs for potato farming are higher than inflation, i.e. real input costsഀ are increasing. At the same time real market prices are moving sidewaysഀ and hence a significant price-cost squeeze effect impacting on theഀ sustainability of potato production. It is noteworthy that the number ofഀ potato producers has declined from 2 000 in the early 1990s to 560 inഀ 2017.

Size distribution of potatoes sold on markets

Potatoesഀ size distribution on all markets: Class1, 10 kg bags (March of each yearഀ 2017 to 2019). Large potatoes for 2017 was at 32% and dropped to 31% forഀ 2018 and dropped even further to 27% for 2019. Medium size potatoes forഀ 2017 and 2018 was at 57% and increased to 59% for 2019. Small and babyഀ potatoes represented a total of 11% in 2017, increased to 12% for 2018ഀ and further increased to 14% in 2019.
