Americas remain dominant suppliers in SA chicken market

In the first eleven months of 2017, South Africa imported a total of 461 thousand tons of chicken. This is down by 7 percent when compared to the corresponding period in the previous year. During this period the Americas, that is, Brazil and the United States, were the key suppliers accounting for more than two thirds of the imports. Trailing the Americas was Europe which accounted for 15 percent of the market share.


  • While the overall chicken imports fell by 7 percent y/y by November 2017, the composition of cuts imported offers a mix picture. Breasts, leg-quarters and mechanically deboned cuts increased by 38.9, 1.6, and 4.4 percent respectively. Meanwhile, wings and drumsticks declined by 50.1 and 15.7 percent respectively.
  • With that said, leg-quarters, wings and drumsticks accounted 42 percent of total imported chicken between January and November 2017, whilst mechanically deboned accounted for 41 percent of total imports with the rest classified as other cuts.
  • With regard to the origin of chicken imports, Brazil is the main supplier with its shares increasing from 41 percent in 2016 to 62 percent in 2017. During the same period, USA shares increased from 4 to 16 percent, making it a second biggest supplier. The European Union also remains a key player in the South African chicken market with an import share of 15 percent in 2017.
