Prof. Ferdi Meyer (BFAP) opened the session by addressing the transformation of agricultural potential for economic growth and poverty alleviation. He emphasised the significant contribution of agriculture to GDP and employment while highlighting the need for investment in infrastructure and farmer support.

Agbiz CEO, Mr. Theo Boshoff, explored the complexities of navigating policy in the post-truth era. He stressed the importance of evidence-based decision-making and Agbiz’s role in shaping policy through professional expertise and official channels.

Mr. Wandile Sihlobo (Agbiz Chief Economist) provided key insights into South Africa’s agricultural policy direction for 2025. He outlined global economic trends, trade relations, and the potential impact of geopolitical shifts on the sector.

Legal and policy updates were delivered by Ms. Annelize Crosby (Agbiz Head of Legal Intelligence), covering crucial legislative developments such as the Expropriation Act, Preservation of Agricultural Land Act, and emissions regulations. She highlighted Agbiz’s ongoing engagements to ensure fair and balanced policies.

Ms. Thapelo Machaba (Agbiz Agricultural Economist) presented an overview of labour policies, discussing employment equity targets, labour law reforms, and national minimum wage adjustments. She emphasised the need for sector-specific considerations in regulatory changes.

Trade developments were unpacked by Mr. Wolfe Braude (Agbiz Fruit Manager), who detailed market access opportunities, AGOA trade concerns, and regional trade agreements. His insights underscored the importance of securing global market positioning for South African exports.
