South
Africa’s maize farmers and farmworkers are working hard across the country,
harvesting this season’s maize. There is good progress, and in the week of 01
June 2024, about 878 511 tonnes of
maize were delivered to commercial silos. This placed the overall seasonal
maize deliveries so far at 5,02 million tonnes.
There is
still a lot of work ahead. The overall maize harvest is estimated at 13,3
million tonnes. The quality of the harvest so far is decent.
While South
Africa’s expected maize harvest of 13,3 million tonnes is down 19% from the
previous season, it will still meet the annual maize needs of 12,0 million
tonnes. South Africa will have just over a million tonnes for exports. These
exports will considerably help the Southern Africa region this year when there
are shortages in most countries.
Still, we
continue to see upside price risks, especially towards the end of this year and
into the first quarter of 2024. Our particular concern is white maize.
